''A great place to be cared for; a great place to work''

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay has been nationally recognised as the UK’s most inclusive NHS organisation. As such we have a firm commitment to strengthening the diversity of our workforce, and therefore welcome and encourage applications from likeminded people who can support our ambition to become effortlessly inclusive. We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Palliative Medicine. This is an additional appointment to join an established Palliative Medicine team, currently consisting of three Consultants. This is an integrated role across both community and acute hospital settings, whilst working collaboratively with two local hospices, St John’s (Lancaster) and St Mary’s (Ulverston).

There is a well-established Clinical Nurse Specialist team which includes Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Non-Medical Prescribers, and which covers both the acute and community settings. We are proud to work alongside our innovative bereavement team, and are fortunate to have excellent administrative support.

There is a strong ethos of multidisciplinary working within the Palliative Care team across the Bay and we work collaboratively with the psychology, chaplaincy and complimentary therapy teams; as well as pharmacy, social work and other allied health care professionals. Morecambe Bay has 9 integrated care communities and we work in partnership with our colleagues in Primary Care. There is a good relationship with the local anaesthetic pain specialists who provide an excellent pain assessment and anaesthetic intervention service.

Morecambe Bay forms part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Palliative and End of Life Network, creating a strong alliance with neighbouring centres.

Lancaster University is the home of the International Observatory on End of Life Care. We continue to build strong relationships with the team there, creating a powerful voice for both clinical and academic palliative care in the area.

The Trust has a keen interest in medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students from Lancaster Medical School receive the whole of their education, academic and clinical, in Cumbria and North Lancashire. The Palliative Care team is actively involved in undergraduate medical training, which includes placements in the 4th year, and support for Special Study Modules. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to support the further development of Palliative Medicine education in this area.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust are keen to support enthusiastic and committed individuals and in return, we offer excellent development and training support as well as a suitable bespoke relocation package and attractive SPA allowance tailored for the successful candidate. The base site for this post is flexible and would be agreed with the successful applicant. This is 1.0 WTE substantive consultant post, however applications for less than full time work would be welcomed.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust covers a large geographic area which encompasses the Furness peninsula, the city of Lancaster and the Lake District. One of the largest employers in the area, we have approximately 6,000 staff working across five sites; Furness General Hospital (Barrow in Furness), Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital (Kendal), Ulverston Community Health Centre and Queen Victoria Centre (Morecambe). Our hospital sites are close to the beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, with great educational opportunities for all ages, affordable housing, and easy access by road and rail to Manchester, Liverpool and beyond. By joining us you will be part of a progressive team committed to diversity, excellence and achievement.

You must be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of attaining your CCT at the time of interview.

Interview expenses will be paid from the point on entry in the UK. Travel to and from the UK is at the candidates own expense.

We would encourage interested candidates to visit the department by arrangement.
