''A great place to be cared for; a great place to work''

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay has been nationally recognised as the UK’s most inclusive NHS organisation. As such we have a firm commitment to strengthening the diversity of our workforce, and therefore welcome and encourage applications from likeminded people who can support our ambition to become effortlessly inclusive. We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Applications are invited for three Consultant Anaesthetist posts with an interest in ICU, based at Furness General Hospital. You will join an expanding department of 9 Consultants (inc these 3 posts), 12 Associate specialists, 2 Specialist doctors and 1 FY2 doctor (shared between ICU and surgery). You will participate in a 1 in 8 second call-rota for ICU. You are expected to cover theatre sessions at Furness General Hospital and sometimes Westmorland General Hospital, Kendal.

The Anaesthetic department supports all the general services of the hospital including a busy Accident and emergency department, maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedics and trauma, Eyes, ENT and general medicine.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the department at a time we are going through significant service transformation change as we expand the first call rota of associate specialists to allow two resident senior anaesthetists working in tandem doing 12 hour shifts supported by the non-resident ICU consultant(these posts). We have also started a rolling Consultant of the week system in Intensive Care on prospective 1:8 rota from September 2019. We have recently opened the purpose built South Lakes Birthing Centre on site which is fully supported by a 24/7 epidural service. Furness General Hospital is a lovely, friendly small district general hospital on the south west coast of the Lake District. Westmorland General Hospital is located on the outskirts of the popular Lakeland town of Kendal. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust provides undergraduate medical training for Lancaster Medical School students, as well as academic/research links with Lancaster University.

Both hospitals are situated in areas of outstanding natural beauty, which offer superb outdoor and recreational activities close to the Lake District. There is access to the M6 motorway via A590 and a direct rail link to Manchester and its airport from both sites. There are good schools in the town and surrounding area.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has a keen interest and extensive involvement in Medical and Dental Education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. We work in partnership with Lancaster Medical School, North Western Deanery and Health Education North West to provide quality education and training which meets the requirements of these regulatory bodies as well as the Trust’s high standards of patient care. UHMBFT provides one of the main NHS settings for students from Lancaster Medical School as we co-ordinate, deliver and quality assure the clinical component of Lancaster Medical Schools MBChB degree programme.
