Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic dietitian to join our friendly and supportive team. The post would be ideally suited to an experienced Band 6 Dietitian looking to expand their skills. Opportunities may also be available for a training and development role for dietitians developing in their band 5 role progressing to a Band 6 role in line with the competency framework.

Applicants should be HCPC registered dietitians. The post will be based at Furness General Hospital and will involve travel to other sites within South Cumbria.

The Hospitals are situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park, surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty offering superb outdoor and recreational activities, particularly related to the sea, lakes, fells and countryside. Cities such as Liverpool and Manchester are merely a train or car journey away. With Lancaster being on the mainline for trains travelling to London or Edinburgh, you could be in the capitals within 2.5 hours.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work as part of a small team, with the support of experienced dietitians. The post covers a range of inpatient work including medical, surgical, orthopaedics, oncology and stroke management as well as outpatient clinics. As such you will gain experience in a wide range of clinical areas such as nutrition support, enteral feeding, gastroenterology and weight management. Opportunities to gain experience in dietetic specialist areas will be supported where appropriate.

The department is approved for training of dietetic students. We have excellent IT facilities and are committed to personal development and training.


Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals -Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registered Dietitian
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate dietetic training
  • FODMAPS trained
  • Clinical supervisory skill course


Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate clinical experience in an acute setting
  • Experience of working in a variety of clinical specialities
Desirable criteria
  • At least 2 years post graduate experience in an acute setting
  • Experience as a supervisor of dietetic staff
  • Experience of student training supervision
