Job overview

A great opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated physiotherapist to join our Physiotherapy team as a specialist physiotherapist at Furness General Hospital. Our Hospital is part of the University of Morecambe Bay Trust, situated close to the Lake District with easy access to large cities such as Preston and Manchester via the M6.

There will be opportunities to develop clinical skills and specialise within a range of rotations across our services. These will include, inpatient surgery/ICU, medicine, orthopaedics, rehab and outpatients. You will also participate in the weekend working and respiratory on call service.

You will be responsible for the support and development of band 5 physiotherapists and supervision of technical instructors, with opportunities to develop your role as a clinical educator and taking responsibility for undergraduate students. You will also be encouraged and supported to engage in, and lead training as required. Good communication and team working skills are essential for this post.

Main duties of the job

To work as an individual within the physiotherapy team in a variety of
Clinical areas providing specialist physiotherapeutic assessment,
diagnosis, treatment and advice for a range of frequently complex
conditions for patients on their caseload.

To be responsible for your own clinical record keeping, including hand-written and electronic data recording, in accordance with Trust, Care Group and Chartered Society of Physiotherapists standards. 

To supervise, and assist in the education of other Physiotherapy staff, Undergraduate Physiotherapy students, work experience students and other professions.

To form professional relationships with patients / carers / family members which may be in distressing circumstances, and who may exhibit challenging behaviour, and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.

To take an active part in In-Service Training and external education in line with Continual Professional Development (CPD) Care Group Guidelines, to maintain standards of care in line with evidence based practice. To disseminate information from training attended as required

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Honours Degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy approved by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy/ Health and Care Professions Council
  • Health and Care Professions Council registered Physiotherapist

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of relevant post graduate specialist clinical education
  • Experience Comprehensive rotational experience as a Staff grade in the core competencies within physiotherapy for example: musculo-skeletal, neurology and cardio- respiratory care
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills in English in a variety of settings.
  • Experience of working within a team

Skills/Ability/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of commitment, motivation and adaptability.
  • Ability to think quickly, assess clinical situations and make decisions upon that information.
  • Must demonstrate a knowledge of team / group dynamics and understand the role of a Specialist Physiotherapist within a team.
  • Understanding of legal responsibilities within the profession.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the confidence to take independent action within expected capabilities.
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Ability to liaise effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To have a clear understanding of the role of a Specialist Physiotherapist in their approach to their professional duties.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic awareness of current NHS issues.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • To have a knowledge of audit tools and awareness of organizational and clinical standards in Physiotherapy.

  • Ability to meet the physical/ psychological requirements of the post.
