Job overview

We have a vacancy for a Clinical Leader on the Children's Ward at Furness General Hospital.

The Children’s Unit is a busy mixed speciality unit providing care for a wide range of conditions. It compromises a 14 bed In-patient Ward, 8 bed Day Care Unit, 4 bed assessment unit and an Out-patient Department. The Special Care Baby Unit comprises 4 cots and a stabilisation area.

The successful candidate will have  the opportunity to develop leadership skills required for their clinical leader role over this twelve month fixed term contract.

Main duties of the job

  • Have continuing responsibility for the delivery of care needs and maintenance of clinical standards rotating through CYP services for inpatients, day care, assessment unit and ED.
  • Provide effective leadership and support to all grades of staff, planning and directing activities to provide the optimal standard of care
  • Ensure that the ward/dept is clean and provides a safe environment for children, parents and staff
  • Deputise for Senior Nurses when required.

Undertake Directorate site based management responsibilities as required

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals -Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children’s Nurse
  • Post basic qualification relevant to children’s nursing
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • 1st degree or willingness to undertake same


Essential criteria
  • Recent experience at senior staff nurse level within children’s nursing
  • Evidence of clinical competence in a wide range of paediatric nursing skills
  • Understanding of the setting and monitoring of standards
  • Evidence of teaching and developing staff
Desirable criteria
  • Recent leadership development or willingness to undertake course
