We are looking for a Physiotherapist to join the South Cumbria Community Therapy Team, based from the community offices at Westmorland General  Hospital, Kendal.   As part of the South Cumbria team, which has bases in Kendal and Barrow, you will support the delivery of high quality care to patients both in residential community settings and in their own homes in the community  in South Lakes area and the wider South Cumbria area.  Therefore you must have the ability to work and travel to various sites across the Trust independent of public transport. The team prides itself on agile working with team members working from home, local clinics and the team bases. 

The service works closely with the Integrated Care Communities, local GP's, Adult Social Care, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and hospital discharge teams. The service supports people with a wide variety of conditions including elderly care, frailty and falls, orthopaedics and long term condition management. 

Main duties of the job

Working together to deliver care to patients you will need to: 

  • work as an individual within the community physiotherapy team undertaking specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with frequently complex problems in their own homes, community hospital or residential/nursing home.
  • have completed a range of core rotations within the NHS as a physiotherapist  with a desire  to develop your clinical skills further 
  • demonstrate and evidence your own professional development 
  • demonstrate your ability to work independently when necessary
  • have a friendly and flexible attitude, which is patient focused and dedicated to quality care 
  • use your expertise to supervise and teach physiotherapy students and other staff within the service 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Health and Care Professions Council registered Physiotherapist
  • Honours Degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy approved by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy/Health and Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of relevant post graduate specialist clinical education
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy


Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive rotational experience as a Staff grade in the core competencies within physiotherapy
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills in English in a variety of settings
  • Experience of working within a team
  • Be able to demonstrate awareness of elderly rehabilitation
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of working within the community setting

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of commitment, motivation and adaptability
  • Understanding of legal responsibilities within the profession
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Ability to liaise effectively within the multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to motivate patients and other staff
  • To have a clear understanding of the role of a Specialist
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic awareness of current NHS issues
