''A great place to be cared for; a great place to work''

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay has been nationally recognised as the UK’s most inclusive NHS organisation. As such we have a firm commitment to strengthening the diversity of our workforce, and therefore welcome and encourage applications from likeminded people who can support our ambition to become effortlessly inclusive. We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Job overview

As a Consultant in Emergency Medicine, you will join a highly experienced, multicultural team and benefit from a competitive package which includes 2-hours Out Of Hours PAs.  You will also be able to work the bulk of your SPA time flexibly and off-site, by agreement with the Clinical Lead (or Clinical Director in their absence) and Service Manager.
The department is also in the later stages of moving towards a flexible rostering system to enable medical staff to have greater control over when they deliver their clinical activity, within agreed constraints.
In addition, the Trust is heavily involved in both medical education and medical research and there is the opportunity for the right candidate to become involved in either sub-specialty, as they may so desire.  In addition, due to the challenges faced by Emergency Medicine across the country, you will also have the opportunity to help influence and shape service delivery for the future.

Main duties of the job

  • This post will enhance the Consultant led delivery of Emergency Care to patients attending the Emergency Department of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. A special interest in Paediatric Emergency care, Frailty Emergency care or other sub-specialty is desirable, but not essential.
  • This post offers candidates the unique opportunity to contribute to the further development of the service. Flexible working patterns are seen as essential to the ability of the Department to provide an optimal emergency service responsive to a changing NHS.
  • Out of hours sessions are currently allocated as 2 hrs per session. This is subject to annual review.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Application for this substantive post will only be accepted if you are in the process of obtaining your CCT/CSER within six months of interview.
