Applications are invited from enthusiastic, well-motivated, organised individual, to join the Trusts Macmillan Cancer Information and Support team.

As a  Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager  you will, in conjunction with colleagues, be responsible to further develop, manage and deliver a comprehensive cancer information & support service across University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay  NHS Foundation Trust for people affected by cancer, their families, friends and health and social care professionals.



Main duties of the job

To ensure access for service users to accurate, high quality information and empathetic support, linking with other information providers and support mechanisms both nationally and locally.

To be a specialist information and support resource for health and social care professionals, providing expertise that enhances the skills of the clinical teams. 

To ensure that the service operates in partnership with and is supportive of the aims and values of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in relevant subject
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Communication Skills training
Desirable criteria
  • European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
  • Qualifications in Health Promotion/Health Studies


Essential criteria
  • Managing a service for customers/patients/carers
  • Managing or supervising staff
  • Working autonomously
  • Familiarity with online cancer information resources
  • The ability to assess the quality of information resources in a range of formats
Desirable criteria
  • Audit experience
  • Experience of working with volunteers

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to deal with wide range of data and information and take appropriate decisions from it.
  • Excellent collaborative working skills and able to build strong relationships with clinical leaders and professional staff groups
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with feedback.
  • Ability to work with people with a life threatening illness.
  • Clear understanding of quality assurance issues around patient information
