It is essentially that you are able to manage patients independently , have adequate surgical experience in a variety of ophthalmic procedures.

This post is to cover a consultant vacancy and the department is looking to make further substantive consultant appointments within the year.

The post-holder will have a 10 PA contract and will be a fixed term locum post for a period of 6 months with a view to extend up to a maximum of fixed term for one year.

 

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated person able to lead the glaucoma services in our Trust and compliment the skill mix of our existing team. You will work as part of the
Ophthalmology Department and are expected to provide a high quality service and ensure excellent patient care.

The proposed job plan will consist of 10 PAs, including 1-2 theatres, 4 outpatient clinics, SPA and admin sessions. In addition, there is a requirement to contribute to the on call ophthalmic
service on a currently 1:9 rota, as part of the consultant team in the department.

Working for our organisation

This is an exciting opportunity to be working as part of a dedicated team at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust delivering high quality ophthalmic care to the population of the Morecambe Bay Area.

The development of Better Care Together, a partnership approach between the Trust, Clinical Commissioning Groups and local health and care providers to review how patient services are delivered in the hospital and community. Together we have created a vision and strategic plan for the future.

You will be contracted for 10 programmed activities per week. There is an on call element to the role.

**You must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Ophthalmology department provides the following services:

  • General Ophthalmology (including cataract) clinics on all 3 sites
    · AMD and Medical retina clinics based at WGH including diabetic retinopathy clinics supported by non-medical HCP intravitreal injection clinics)
    · Corneal service supported by two consultants
    · Glaucoma service (with AHP and ANP support, recently established virtual glaucoma clinics running successfully)
    · Oculoplastic service (including Botox and minor-ops clinics)
    · Paediatric service (with Optometric support across 3 sites)
    · Hydroxychloroquine screening service is under development and due to launch soon
    · ECLO services on all 3 sites,
    · There is a well-established digital (photographic and OCT clinic) diabetic screening programme covering Cumbria and North Lancashire.

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (with license to practice)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (or equivalent)

Experience Clinical – general

Essential criteria
  • Practical experience in a wide range of ophthalmic conditions
  • Able to provide emergency cover to ophthalmic patients
  • Experience of clinical supervision of juniors and relevant staff in other disciplines

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of up to date ophthalmic clinical practice
  • Recent active involvement in delivery of Medical Education and multi professional training
