Clinical Investigation Unit (Trainee Assistant Practitioner)

 An opportunity has arisen within Clinical Investigation Unit (CIU) for Level 4 Apprentice, primarily working within Cardio/Respiratory services. Successful candidate will be paid in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change Handbook. For a 2 year trainee program, this would be 70% of the top of scale in the first year, followed by 75% of the top of scale in the second year.

The successful applicants will be reliable, hard working, caring, flexible and enthusiastic individuals, who are able to demonstrate initiative, good organisational and communicative skills. The abilities to integrate well with the existing team, to work independently and to contribute to service development as well as quality improvement are essential.

Training is in partnership with Kendal College, incorporating the 2 year foundation degree in Health Care Sciences. Theoretical support and practical training will be delivered in house as well as via day release. The CIU supports the Lancashire and South Cumbria training pathway already established for Trainee Assistant Practitioners.

The post attracts a band 3 salary, progressing to a band 4 upon award of the foundation qualification and satisfactory completion of on the job training.

Main duties of the job

The apprentice  will be required to provide support to the clinical physiology team, working in areas such as Electrocardiograms (ECG), ambulatory ECG and BP hook up and analysis, prolonged ECG monitoring and analysis,  pharmacological stress testing, and assisting in ECG stress testing, basic lung function, sleep studies, bronchial challenge and assisting in CPAP trials.

The CIU works across 3 UHMBT sites –Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) and Furness General Hospital(FGH). The successful applicants will be required to work on the above locations although it is anticipated that the posts will be centred on the RLI site with day release to Kendal college therefore there will be a requirement to travel.

Applicants should be educated to A level or equivalent  NVQ 3, minimum 3 ,GSCE,  Maths, English and Science would be advantageous.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • GCSEs in English Maths & science

  • • ARPT spirometry
  • • Certificate in Electrocardiography

  • • Experience in a health care setting with patient/client contact
  • • Prior employment in a cardiac or respiratory health care environment
